Before I created Bucket List Publications, I was a high school English teacher for 8 years and a university student for 7 years before that; my life was littered with books, reading, and writing. I cherished the daily reading time that was built into my class schedule and I loved going to class to discuss a book, new or old. The feel of the pages below my fingers, the look of the written word displayed before me in sentences and paragraphs, and the unlimited world that was created with each new character and setting all came together to drive my passion for reading. I read 100s, maybe 1000s, of books and narrowed my favorite authors down to a handful. Choosing an absolute favorite seemed impossible; with countless genres spanning the history of time, I didn’t think one would rise above the others. Then, one day in class, a student suggested I read “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom and a new love for reading flourished. I read all of his books over and over again; I found ways to incorporate them into the high school curriculum; I suggested them to everyone I knew. I had found my favorite author. Filled with inspiration and creativity, his books are a cherished addition to my collection. His new book, “The Time Keeper”, is Albom’s most imaginative novel yet. Regardless if you read regularly or just on occasion, give the gift of time this Christmas and experience the world through Mitch Albom’s eyes. Continue reading
Now that we have a baby, we’re actually considering a personalized holiday card for our family. Don’t get me wrong, we’re a far cry from matching, red, knitted sweaters but the idea of sending our parents, siblings, and grandparents a family picture is appealing. After all, they ask for pictures daily and they do live in another country and miss Athena, and us, dearly. Continue reading
I had no idea that coffee is actually good for you, within moderation, of course, like anything else. After watching a medical show a few days ago, I learned that coffee has several health benefits.
1. Coffee slashes your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
2. Coffee can counter cancerous cell damage.
3. Coffee may lower your risk of dementia.
4. Coffee reduces heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases.
5. Coffee may buffer depression.
But as a 32 year old woman it may come as a surprise that I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life. I wanted to start so I tempted Darren with the idea of drinking coffee and he took the bait. He loves researching new products and he was off on a search for the best coffee, coffee makers, and coffee related products. Continue reading
It seems like just yesterday I found out that I was pregnant with Athena. Now, she’s four months old! How did that happen? I felt so prepared for her arrival. We had everything that we needed to take her home and comfortably welcome her into this world, but she is growing so quickly and she learns something new every day. She laughs; with the cutest little giggle, she can melt my heart. She recognizes my voice; when I sing, she is instantly soothed. She looks intently at me; when she watches my every move, I know that I’m the most important person in her world. She’s actually growing out of her clothes and tummy time gets longer almost daily. The time had come to put away the 0-3 month clothes and think about crawling, walking, and eating solids. For a few of our most important baby product needs, we chose Joovy. They recently introduced a new line-up including a walker, a potty, and a step stool. Things change so quickly, I figured I would get all three and be prepared for the next few “steps”. After all, the last four months went by in the blink of an eye. Continue reading
Athena is now 6 weeks old and it’s time I start taking bucket list item #9, lose the baby weight, seriously. Just last year, I ran a marathon; now walking up three flights of stairs leaves me winded. I want to run again, I want to see muscle on my legs, arms, and stomach rather than fat, and more importantly, I want to be healthy and active so when my daughter is ready to play so am I.
