We’re very active when we travel. We like to try as many new things as possible but it can be difficult to find an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Today, at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, we tried Batik Family Painting and we can’t stop talking about how much fun it was and how proud we are of our painting. With Batik painting, you don’t have to be a skilled painter or have any experience at all to create a beautiful keepsake from your trip. It’s the perfect family activity.
We chose a beach scene because that’s where we spend most of our time even when we are not on vacation. When we first looked at it, we thought we’d never really be happy with the results and that it might be too difficult for us. Darren and I are both not very artistic and Athena is just learning to stay inside the lines with coloring.
Rather than getting discouraged, we listened to the instructions and gave it a try. First, you need to wet the area you want to paint and then apply the paint. Athena was helpful with wetting the canvas and choosing the colors. She painted the middle of each piece and we worked around the edges.
It took almost two hours but we stuck with it. We were happy with how it was turning out and wanted to see it through. Even Athena didn’t get discouraged or ask to leave. She was enjoying the process and the family time.
I couldn’t stop looking at it when we finished. We’re proud of what we made. We can’t wait to frame it and hang it in our house. It’s full of imperfections and most likely not going to make us any money some day, but it will be my favorite painting in our house.
It’s beautiful and such a fun family activity! I painted one in Malaysia and use it as a tablecloth in my sunroom!

Sounds like a good idea. What was the scene that you painted?

It’s beautiful fish! It’s smaller than the one you’re doing. But it’s very nice too and it was fun! A great souvenir!

What a great job you’ve done!! Love the colors that Athena chose and you and Dee did a really good job of staying inside the lines!! What a great idea to get Athena to use the plain water – it would give her a great sense of helping!! Very nice job everyone!!

He’s been able to join us a lot lately. Our recent trip to Mexico was just last month and the month before we were in Canada together. He saved vacation all year to really take time now. It’s been great.

This has turned out beautifully! It’s so much better than any of the batique I’ve done, it’s so neat and I love the perspective of the boat.
