I celebrated Canada Day in the nation’s capitol, Ottawa from one of the most beautiful properties in the world, Fairmont Chateau Laurier. It would have been amazing to celebrate Independence Day in the US capitol but maybe I’ll add that to the list for next year. As for today, we celebrated with a few neighborhood friends and now with Athena off to bed I’m settling in for the night and missing the evening festivities. I think as a way of “seeing” more fireworks I’ll share a few of my favorites from Ottawa. If you’ve missed them on Canada Day and you’re not going to get a chance to celebrate this evening, just have a look at a few of the pictures and take a minute to celebrate with me.
Finding family friendly tourist activities can be extremely difficult when traveling with a 15 month old but a helicopter tour is great for all ages. We discovered the Ottawa River, the city of Gatineau, the city of Ottawa including Parliament Hill, and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum all in just 20 minutes. By taking a Heli-Tremblant helicopter tour, we were able to see it all in Ottawa!
A beautiful sea of red and white filled the streets, sidewalks, shops, and restaurants of Ottawa on Canada Day. The city was alive with the spirit of Canada and I felt at home. Ottawa is a thriving city full of culture, government, business, and fun. It has numerous national attractions and s a plethora of other things to see and do. As the capital of Canada, I always envisioned my first visit to Ottawa to be on Canada Day and this year I made it a reality. From 7 am until 11:30 pm, we explored why Ottawa was a great place to visit on Canada Day and I’ve come up with 5 great reasons to visit Ottawa on Canada’s birthday.
I didn’t think I would ever step inside Fairmont Chateau Laurier let alone watch the Canada Day fireworks from the roof-top, the best view in Canada. I’ll explain how I got there in a full post over in the next few days, but for now I wanted to give you a glimpse of the view. I’d write more now but I’m having too much fun in Ottawa to stop for a post. This city has endless possibilities. Continue reading
Now that we live in the US, Canada Day isn’t as much of a big deal for us. Last year, I did put red and white on Athena but we didn’t even have a celebratory drink. I wanted to do Canada Day bucket list style this year so I added it to my 2013 list, and what better place to celebrate the country than in the nation’s capital? Athena and I arrived in Ottawa today and we’re already in love with the place. You should see what we have in store for tomorrow! Continue reading
