Most of my greatest memories as a child and as an adult were at the beach. Well into my adult life, one beach was the main place of joy and happiness for my entire family. Just hearing the name Black Brook Beach in Ingonish, Nova Scotia brings a smile to my face. Boogie boarding in the massive waves there was a huge part of my life. Even my grandmother who is petrified of the water, or maybe more what’s in the water, would join us in the waves at Black Brook. We’d have chicken fights and build sand castles and BBQ hot dogs. It’s my version of the perfect day. When I heard about the death of two of my family members this week, I immediately made my way to the beach. I was more than 2000 miles away from my family but the ocean connected us.

New Brunswick’s Parlee Beach Is Perfect for Kids
We spent the day at Parlee Beach in Shediac, New Brunswick and it was Athena’s idea of a dream beach. It offers a playground, soft sand, warm, shallow waters, life guards and bathrooms. Athena and I will be spending most of our three-week New Brunswick vacation at Parlee Beach because it doesn’t get any better than this. Continue reading
Did You Ever Consider Latvia as a Beach Destination?
I wanted to visit Latvia since I learned about its strategic war location in high school. I figured as the heart of Europe, it would have a diverse culture with even more diverse architecture. It wasn’t a wrong assumption and Riga’s role as the European Capital of Culture this year is proof. What I didn’t realize is that it’s home to great adventures in Sigulda, including bobsledding, rock climbing, bungee jumping, and a Tarzan park, and the town of Jurmala is an extremely popular beach destination. With therapeutic thermal waters, peat mud, pine forests, healthy maritime climate, dunes, and beaches covering 32.8 kilometres, Jurmala is the largest resort city in the Baltic States. Since it’s too cold for swimming , I wasn’t exactly looking to get in the water but seeing the Baltic Sea was on my list this year so I made the short drive from Riga to Jurmala to check another item off of my 2014 list. What I found was more than a check mark; it was magnificent! Continue reading

I’ve Got the Blues
I’ve got the blues; the Caribbean blues. From the ocean, to the rooftop pool, San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel is a turquoise paradise. The entire decor takes its cue from the transparent waters of the Caribbean Sea, a cool mix of blues that swirl, ripple, and cascade throughout the building. Coupled with crisp whites, the blues come alive and keep you in the beach atmosphere even in your room. Continue reading
Exhale – We’ve Arrived at Marriott, Grand Cayman
2013 was an amazing year filled with family, travel, and adventure, but sometimes we just need a minute to exhale. Today, we arrived at Grand Cayman Marriott and that’s exactly what we did – breathed out, relaxed, and took it all in. Continue reading
Add it to the List – I “Love” Beach Tennis
While in Aruba, I discovered a new sport that combines everything I love about sports. Take the fun and fast-paced sport of tennis, add a volleyball court, and a sunny beach setting, and you have the new, exciting sport called beach tennis. It’s like tennis except its played on a regulation beach volleyball court. Two to four players on each team volley back and forth without letting the ball bounce. One hit per team is all that is allowed and points are scored when the ball is hit outside the lines or touches the ground. Beach tennis is played with specially designed paddles and de-pressurized tennis balls that make it easier to keep a rally going. After twenty minutes of instruction, I was ready to test my skills in a match and after two hours, I wanted to add “play beach tennis regularly” to my bucket list. I think I found my new favorite sport. Continue reading
Back to the Beach
My ten days in Jordan were life-changing. I journeyed to five of my bucket list locations including Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, and Jerash. I hiked, swam, walked, and climbed my way through the country. I rode 4x4s, buses, cars, planes, donkeys, and camels; and I am exhausted. After ten days of being a hyperactive tourist, I want some beach time. This week we are relaxing at Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina in Fort Myers, Florida. My plan is to spend as much time as humanly possible in the pool and on the beach. Forget constant exercise and adventure; I’m ready to relax. Continue reading
I’ll Take the Beach Any Day – Virginia Beach
Seeing the ocean adds years to my life! I’m calmer, more relaxed, and at peace. Life is
less stressful. How could I see things less than perfect when the soothing waves are crashing next to me, the sand is warm and soft below my feet, and the ocean smell is in the air? Marketing companies should create a beach scent that is vented through office buildings. I bet they would make billions. Continue reading
