The Top 10 World’s Most-Visited Tourist Attractions article was received with skepticism. With more than half of the spots in the US, it was questionable on how the “attractions” were measured. The good part about the list is that it was controversial; I actually liked that it brought a lot of comments and evoked thoughts about what should really be on the list. After touring 34 countries, I decided that I would make my own “Top Ten Tourist Attractions” list. While I can’t address places I haven’t seen nor can I speak for anyone else, these ten attractions stood out above the rest for me. I’m certain that the list will change with time; it will most likely change in a few weeks after I visit Fiji, but for now… these are my top ten tourist attractions.

At the Selvatura Hummingbird Garden in Monteverde, Costa Rica visitors can observe more than 14 different species of hummingbirds including species that are not commonly seen in other areas of Monteverde. At 140.6 miles, the Ironman Triathlon is known for its grueling length, hard race conditions, and outstanding athletes. It is recognized
world-wide as one of the most difficult competitions in existence, yet I’ve recently learned about a competition that makes even the Ironman look doable. La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is an excruciatingly demanding multi-day race traveling a perilous river route across the country of Belize. The route runs West to East along the Macal and Belize Rivers in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. Although it is a race for everyone, not just professional racers, the 170 miles of river racing is the epitome of sportsmanship and athleticism. This year, on March 9th-12th, Shane Perrin, along with the support and sponsorship of Pau Hana Surf Supply, was the first person to complete the La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge on a paddleboard. Set atop the spine of Costa Rica’s continental divide, Monteverde is a place of cloud forests, coffee plantations, monkeys, mist, and friendly locals, but it is a world above for one main reason – its zip-lines and suspension bridges are the longest, and most exciting, in the country. The cables and platforms that are built into the cloud forest rather than above it,
allowed us to feel truly immersed into the forested environment. Furthermore, the so-called “Tarzan Swing” at the end of the tour (a large, swing-like contraption that allows participants to swing out above the forest ) was an unexpected, but welcomed, surprise. Once you do a canopy tour in Costa Rica, all other “zip-lines” will feel like child’s play.
The Extremo Canopy Tour began with an introduction to the safety equipment by local, albeit YOUNG, well-trained guides. During this segment, we were fitted with harnesses and taught the proper technique for riding the cables. Soon after, the flight through the forest began. Continue reading
