Hornblower Dinner Cruise in Newport Beach

Hornblower Dinner Cruise, Newport Beach, California Hornblower Cruises are always visible in Newport marina. They are like a moving billboard for themselves. The guests appear happy, the boats look luxurious, and the location is ideal. We figured it was time we gave them a try for ourselves. They market celebrations like birthdays and anniversaries, but we like to celebrate every day. Rather than waiting for a special occasion, we like to bring the special occasion to us. We booked a Saturday night dinner cruise including a 3 hour yacht cruise, four-course dinner, a boarding glass of champagne, soda, coffee, tea, and water included, private tables, DJ entertainment, and a dance floor. We cruised Newport Beach in style, dined on scrumptious food, and danced until the music stopped. It was like New Year’s Eve but it was February 27th. Continue reading

Jetpack America Flight for Barry’s Graduation

Jetpack flight with Jetpack America

Flying a jetpack with Jetpack America was one of the greatest adventures of my life and thanks to Jetpack America Newport Beach I was able to provide that same adventure for my brother. My youngest brother, Barry, just graduated from college and he’s in SoCal visiting before he enters the next stage in his life and looks for a career. I wanted to do something for him to say congratulations. I wanted for him to have a great adventure and remember this time with fondness. Not knowing what’s to come during this transition can be stressful and exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time. A flight with Jetpack America was a reflection of the mixed emotions he’s feeling right now. Succeeding at the flight made him feel stronger; more invincible and a little bit more capable of succeed at his next big adventure.  Continue reading

Why Being a Travel Writer is Better than Winning the Lotto‏

Newport Coast Villas

As I was flying in first class because of a free upgrade then again when I arrived at Marriott’s Newport Coast Villas to two massive welcome baskets and a schedule of luxury events, it really sunk in; being a travel writer is better than winning the lottery. There are some perks that even money can’t buy and I’d choose this life over winning the lottery. Continue reading

Better than Christmas Morning – Arriving at Newport Coast Villas

Marriott's Newport Coast Villas #MarriottNCV

Imagine getting in a vehicle, an airplane, falling asleep, and waking up in an entirely different place, a whole new world. That’s what it must feel like for Athena when we travel to new countries or cities. This morning, she woke up at Marriott’s Newport Coast Villas, our home for the next six days. Although it might have been confusing for her, it was the best kind of confusion. The Marketing Manager left us welcome baskets and what was inside was better than Christmas morning. Jetpacks are Only Real in Movies, Right?

There is a commercial, I don’t even know what it’s advertising, that has Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno; I think it’s a car commercial. Do you know which one I’m talking about? In this commercial, a jetpack is used as the most bizarre, ultimate bargaining chip, winning out over a private zip line over New York City. Jetpacks, after all, are a thing of the future and would only really be used in the movies or commercials, right? That’s what I thought until I was searching the internet one day for extreme, unique experiences in southern California and low and behold a jetpack adventure popped up with Jetlev Southwest. Newport Beach Never Ceases to Amaze Me

“The OC” was my guilt pleasure from 2003 to 2007. Ryan and Marissa’s affluent seaside lives in Newport Beach created a fantasy land that I longed to experience. It wasn’t the high-class world of Newport Beach that enthralled me; it was more of the surroundings and possibilities that held my attention and kept me dreaming. Growing up in the harsh winters and short summers of eastern Canada left me wanting more sunshine, ocean waves, warm weather, and hot sandy beaches. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that when I finally made my dream location, southern California, my home, I spent countless days and nights at Newport Beach.  Continue reading

“Feelin’ Christmas-Sea in Newport Beach!”

We joined over a million viewers as we watched beautifully decorated yachts, boats, kayaks, and canoes sail along the harbor in the 103rd Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. The Christmas Boat Parade is a magical holiday tradition for all ages. Many people view the Newport Beach Christmas boat parade from the shores lining Newport Bay. The parade is free, so viewing from the shoreline is both an entertaining and a cheap family holiday activity. Instead of standing along the shore and fighting for a spot, however, we participated in the actual Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade on a beautifully decorated Davey’s Locker cruise. Many people assume, like I did, that the popular Newport Harbor tours would suspend their operation while the large boat procession was in progress, but, that’s not the case. In fact, taking the harbor tour was the best way to see the boat parade. We were able to get up close and personal with the other boats, making it easier to see the details of the floats and snap photos. The unique experience of being on the water viewing what the New York Times stated as “one of the top 10 holiday happenings in the nation” made a unique, lasting Christmas memory for Darren and I.
